About Downtown Core Neighbourhood

Source: URA

The Downtown Core stands as the historical and central hub of Singapore, serving as the primary commercial district, excluding reclaimed lands. This area features renowned integrated resorts, including the opulent Marina Bay Sands, recognized as one of the world’s most expensive structures, complete with a luxurious standalone casino along Bayfront Avenue. Notable skyscrapers grace the landscapes of Raffles Place, Tanjong Pagar, and Marina Bay Central Business District (CBD), adhering to a height limit of 280m. However, with the new Skywaters Residences condo to be completed in 2028, it will be the new tallest building at 305m. Positioned within the highly urbanized Central Area, one of eleven planning regions, the Downtown Core is surrounded by Rochor to the north, Kallang to the northeast, Marina East, Marina South, and Straits View to the east, Bukit Merah to the south, and Outram, Museum, and Singapore River to the west.

As Singapore’s financial epicenter, the Downtown Core accommodates the headquarters and offices of numerous corporations, along with housing significant governmental institutions, such as the Parliament and the Supreme Court of Singapore.

The origins of Singapore’s modern history trace back to the Downtown Core, where Stamford Raffles and representatives of the British East India Company established a free port along the banks of the Singapore River. The city naturally expanded around this initial harbor, evolving into the present-day Central Area.

While the term “Downtown Core” might not be commonly heard, the term Central Business District (CBD) is frequently used instead. However, it’s essential to note that the CBD constitutes a smaller area within the Downtown Core, primarily in its south-western and western sections, characterized by numerous skyscrapers. The CBD encompasses eight subzones: Anson, Cecil, Clifford Pier, Maxwell, Phillip, Raffles Place, Tanjong Pagar, and Marina Centre. Over time, the core of the CBD has expanded beyond its original boundaries, and the term is often used to refer to the Central Area as a whole.
